AC_C_TYPEOF seems like the best bet to me, but I'm not sure it's in autoconf 2.60 (our current AC_PREREQ). All I've got here is 2.59 (which does not appear to have AC_C_TYPEOF) and 2.64 (which does). It looks like the autoconf AC_C_TYPEOF checks for both typeof and __typeof__.
