But if not, it's actually a bit more complicated. Panels have fixed timings and need to be fed those timings (1400x1050 for example). When you use a lower resolution, you still feed the panel it's native timings, but you use a scaler to either scale the lower res up to the native size or to generate a "centered" mode. You could try generating a custom modeline, but at the moment the driver cannot use custom modes as there is a chance they could damage the panel.
