bash-3.2$ LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 glxinfo -l|grep MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE
GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE = 1024
creating the /etc/drirc file as indicated resolves the problem
