Hi All, Sorry for asking what is probably a common question but after several days of mucking around I have decided it would be appropriate to ask the experts. I have downloaded the latest stable version of Debian and KDE to run on an old HP NetServer E60 I had.. Found that the software and screen did not talk together - the desktop stretched out across the screen making reading the text impossible. I have visited several links to address this problem and have managed to get the screen to work. The xorg.conf that I have used that works reasonably well is listed below and based on the following link. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=648349 ********************************* XORG.CONF ********************************** # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file) # # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page. # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.) # # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only* # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg # package. # # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated # again, run the following command: # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi" # path to defoma fonts FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType" EndSection Section "Module" Load "i2c" Load "bitmap" Load "ddc" Load "dri" Load "extmod" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "int10" Load "vbe" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "kbd" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xorg" Option "XkbModel" "pc104" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage IIC AGP" Driver "ati" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" EndSection Section "Monitor" Option "DPMS" Identifier "Samsung205BW" VendorName "Samsung" ModelName "SyncMaster 205BW" DisplaySize 433 270 HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0 VertRefresh 56.000 - 63.000 Modeline "1680x1050" 146.25 1680 1784 1960 2240 1050 1053 1059 1089 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage IIC AGP" Monitor "Samsung205BW" Defaultdepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1680x1050" EndSubSection EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Default Layout" Screen "Default Screen" InputDevice "Generic Keyboard" InputDevice "Configured Mouse" EndSection Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSection **************************************************************** OK. The problem is that (1) the screen resolution is noted in Debian/GNOME and KDE as 1280x800 and it appears to be this resolution, rather than 1680x1050. (2) I note that the screen extends below the bottom of
the screen.
What I mean here is that if I put the GNOME or KDE toolbar on the top/left/right of the screen it sites on the edge and all amplets/plugins are aligned properly. If I put the toolbar on the bottom of the screen it sits below the bottom edge. (3) the fonts are not clean. Like most people on the various discussion boards I have text that fades every 9 or so characters. Although able to be read the text some characters (e.g. ', ") are difficult to view. Has anyone had any experience using the "ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage IIC AGP" graphics card with the "Samsung SyncMaster 205BW"? Any help would be greatly appreciated. As is probably obvious I am a linux/debian/kde novice. -- Thanks Simon Simon Cropper mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |
