You're not using the right Mesa, or your DRM is too old.
DRM check: `dmesg | grep radeon` and look for "Initialized radeon 1.xx". You
need version 1.29 for r5xx support.
Did you use the live ebuild from x11 overlay for Mesa? If not, try using it.
Make sure to do `eselect opengl set xorg-x11` afterwards.
