xrandr is the preferred method. See this page for more info: http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 while zaphod mode (aka xinerama or screen based multi-head) is still supported, you'll need a newer xserver (1.4 or higher, due to a bug in 1.3) and a newer version of the radeon driver.
