I guess there must have been some lasting trouble getting this chip to work. Knoppix 5.3.1 locks up (trying "ati" driver) even booting with failsafe when allowed to try to get to X. Knoppix 6.0.1 with xorg 1.4.2 manages to get into X, though if left there more than briefly it too locks up the system. Even though I wanted to avoid an openSUSE release lacking support for the best X environment, I upgraded to 11.2 using zypper and the optional/unsupported KDE3 repo.
