And apparently blew out the capacitors on my motherboard or PSU. No post-mortem
yet, but the smell is familiar. ;)

Sergey, I recommend taking appropriate backup measures. It is possible this
problem indicates an actual hardware failure, and is not caused by software. (I
suspect voltage fluctuations caused by aging/faulty capacitors; a temperature
sensor I'd attached at the base of the northbridge heatsink indicated ~ 55'C, a
normal temperature for my setup, at the time of the breakdown.)
