I forgot to address this. What's on your kernel cmdline? Which display is your #1?
If the 1680x1050 is on #1, you probably need 'video=1680x1050' on cmdline, but even video=1600x900 may work better than nothing. vga= on cmdline has no impact after init progresses significantly as long as KMS is in effect.
