I have an RV350 card that sometimes has the same problems (although they
were much more sever in the past).  The problem seems to be a timeout or
a crash on the GPU.  It usually recovers quickly and continues to
function, but I had it take down X on a few occasions.  Using a display
mode with lower refresh rate (reduced blanking and 50Hz) should help.
