I have an RV350 card that sometimes has the same problems (although they were much more sever in the past). The problem seems to be a timeout or a crash on the GPU. It usually recovers quickly and continues to function, but I had it take down X on a few occasions. Using a display mode with lower refresh rate (reduced blanking and 50Hz) should help.
