I forgot about this bug report, but I have experienced this even more
frequently  when using the proprietary ATI driver. I work around it by  moving
the mouse over a VM window, which restores the cursor. I am definitely using an
old kernel and X though, as I use Scientific Linux now.

$ uname -a
[...] 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ sudo yum info xorg-x11-drivers
[...]
Name        : xorg-x11-drivers
Arch        : x86_64
