And strangely enough, I'm now getting full vdpauinfo, and glxinfo is behaving itself. I've been working through issues with this card for about four months (since end of December 2013) and it's entirely possible I've only now got the right combination of correct configuration and right code... my most recent build of mesa is from May 12th [1], and the only other movement on this system has been a manipulation of my 20-radeon.conf file.
Regardless, it's looking like this problem may be "solved". Thank you all for your time on this - I truly appreciate it.
