To Kohjinsha and X-Org Geode driver mailing list: AMD Mailing list users,
I'm dealing with a Geode notebook vendor in Japan that isn't giving the settings for the LCD panel that appears not to support EDID. Also all that I know is it's not 60HZ too. It's a popular UMPC notebook sold around the world with little support given (see below). Can someone (possibly you) confirm EDID probing works on the Panel (LVDS) interface in current Geode driver releases? I think we are dealing with non-standard hardware that doesn't support DDC/EDID. If EDID works on the VGA port (DDC) - it should work on the panel too right?) I've gone to great lengths to get them to give me the settings. Someone who's Japanese managed to work it out and the solution is on his blog here (without the full xorg.conf modeline). 090510 - 何も思いつかない日。 http://www.vnop.net/~uch/blog/2009/05/090510.html This letter is a follow up to: http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-driver-geode/2009-May/000515.html - talking about AMD's Geode drivers hiding their "custom" LCD settings in compiled configuration file used by Windows Letter to Kohjinsha support: KuroSara, A friend of mine took the time to translate this to get your attention. Luke Same as above in English: I need the model, or specifications for the LCD panel. At least tell me what the refresh rate is configured to be. The Linux drivers on your website are totally useless without this data, so you shouldn't bother putting it there without without the settings (xorg.conf) to properly configure the driver. From the Microsoft Windows (registry and configuration) I can see on that platform, all the parameters of the LCD are non-standard. The AMD Geode system in Windows or Linux has no capability to probe the LCD settings, they must be manually (statically) configured. The only way to get these settings is break open my notebook case and have a look! Surely there is an easier way! I ask you kindly to please provide information about the LCD in the SA8/E9 series notebook. Regards, Luke McKee P.S. If you can't give a justifiable reason for not telling me the refresh rate for the LCD? How can tat be top secret? Here is the information I need. Pick any one! 1) LCD Refresh rate & timing for the native 1024x600 mode From Wikipedia: "The bare display panel will only accept a digital video signal at the resolution determined by the panel pixel matrix designed at manufacture. Some screen panels will ignore colour LSB bits to present a consistent interface (8bit->6bit/colour)." - so I need the right settings or it wont work, plain and simple I need custom panel timings: PixelClock, HorzActive, HorzSync etc.. You should provide this as EDID doesn't seem supported by the Panel. Developer notes for Intel's drivers Windows CE say this: "There is also an option to detect the displays before the actual initialization of the display ports to happen. However, this option must be used carefully, displays without EDID tend NOT to be detected." Intel in their windows XP/CE video drivers allow vendors provide all the settings in a way professionals can look up. With AMD they are compiled into a binary file. Now the AMD developers on the list: Who's stupid idea was it to hide this information so some guy in Japan can stop me from using my notebook in Linux? Was he the same guy that put the feature request in? (see my earlier post @ http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-driver-geode/2009-May/000515.html ) Settings that intel use for custom LCD panels in CE: ;[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Display\Intel\Config\1\Port\4\DTD\1] ; "PixelClock"=dword:9c40 ; "HorzActive"=dword:320 ; "HorzSync"=dword:28 ; "HorzSyncPulse"=dword:80 ; "HorzBorder"=dword:0 ; "HorzBlank"=dword:100 ; "HorzSize"=dword:0 ; "VertActive"=dword:280 ; "VertSync"=dword:1 ; "VertSyncPulse"=dword:4 ; "VertBorder"=dword:0 ; "VertBlank"=dword:1c ; "VertSize"=dword:0 ; "Flags"=dword:1e So pretend you are supporting Windows CE, not Linux and give me the settings please or tell me where I can go to find them. 2) Name the LCD Model / manufacturer. I'll talk to them and they'll give me the settings 3) Do you use a Auxiliary Display controller (DCON) like the XO from laptop.org? Is that why my query concerns sensitive or secret information? (http://wiki.laptop.org/go/DCON) I see the windows XP driver lets me downscale from 1024x768 to 1024x600 automatically whist having full resolution come out the VGA port. From what it seems you don't, if you do this could complicate thing, and I'd require more specific implementation on your settings. This is because I've seen the windows driver do 1024x768 on the output (VGA) and the same image scaled to 1024x600 on the panel simultaneously. Mailing list boys: Can the AMD stock standard windows drivers do that? I think they can. The Linux driver doesn't detect a DCON. This is Kurosawa at Kohjinsha HQ in Japan. We are not allowed to provide you such detail data or confidential kind. We do not respond to the questions not concerning to our standard product, to such questions on Linux. Best regards, T.Kurosawa Kohjinsha --- I see there are other notebook vendors out there that use 1024x600 panels, in fact I think the updated driver I use in windows came from a similar notebook. The specs on the panel should not be such a trade secret. Surely there is someone who knows someone who knows the settings and who has come across them this hardware before. I'll update to the latest driver shortly. Any tips for debugging EDID output? _______________________________________________ Xorg-driver-geode mailing list [email protected] http://lists.x.org/mailman/listinfo/xorg-driver-geode
