You cant get GEM working without GEM mesa.
I think if You install latest mesa, and have non GEM kernel it should report
gem no supported faling back to classic.
I haven't tried with older mesa though.

But its not so hard to install 3 sourses for GEM to work, unless You want
dri2 which means recompiling all xorg stuff.
