So I ended up doing that, and then compiling older versions to get this working properly(3d support etc..).
Now the positive side is my macbook pro can probably follow git due to having no proprietary modules. (seems better to do that until hopefully in the future the kernel might have something for nvidia so I don't have to have proprietary stuff). Anyways thanks for the response, Justin P.
