Your symptoms exactly describe a wedged GPU. There is a very good chance that a 2.6.31 kernel would fix your issue. It looks here that your entire stack is pretty old. I would highly recommend that you upgrade your stack; people generally don't enjoy debugging problems that have already (possibly) been solved.
