Sounds to me like you're changing the resolution, I would imagine the TV "auto-compensates" (by stretching) for that just like a PC monitor does.
I used http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/324685#324685 as a hint how to underscan. I never bevor done it and I have not the faintest idea how underscan works. Google isn't really a help. What's the point in overscan when you don't have a DA converter? Don't ask me, I have no idea of all that. All I knew is that the fglrx driver got it right just from the beginning.
