It might take me a while to exercise that possibility.
I see decent-looking instructions at
  http://www.ott.net/knowledge/radeon-kms-on-debian-testing/
but the stock squeeze kernel doesn't have CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS set.

I posted a copy of my Xorg.log.0 with "NewPLL" "False"
to http://doolittle.icarus.com/~larry/radeon-logfile.txt

The misspelled "success" in "Blank CRTC 0 succ3ss" is just
me proving to myself that I have my freshly built radeon_drv.so
in use, and that it's atombios_crtc.c:atombios_blank_crtc()
that claims to be doing the blanking and unblanking.
