This is a completely new situation that has not happened in the past dozen years running linux and the X Window System. A couple of weeks ago I upgraded to Slackware-13.0 (from -12.2) with the 2.6.29.6-smp kernel, xorg-server-1.6.3, and xfce-4.6.1. Rebooting into the new kernel revealed a hardware problem that turned out to be the video/northbridge chip on the motherboard.
I replaced the motherboard, CPU, and memory using the same hard drives. Now I find that when I try to paste text marked and cut with the left mouse button, nothing happens. I'll get a white line on the vt, or an xfce4 menu in a GUI application, but no pasting. Killing the X server and restarting it restores the capability. However, this can happen multiple times per day. Since I use this capability hundreds of times each day as I work, it's not acceptable to have it continue failing. No one on the local linux/unix mail list, the Slackware mail list, or the xfce mail list has been able to help me resolve this problem. I certainly hope that someone here can point me to a source and a solution. Saturday night I'll let memtest86 run because there's not too much mail that comes in during the weekend. I'll also be replacing the hard drive(s) with a new drive. If the problem is caused by hardware, and the memory checks out OK, then the new hard drive should fix it. If it's a software issue, I need your guidance in finding what broke so it can be fixed.
