Where are "emc" and "ubuntu machine". What does emc stand for?
I think 150' of CAT5 is okay (assuming you mean feet and not meters) see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_5_cable but make sure the connectors at each end are solid. Are ends commercial or hand-made?
