Hi Norbert, The pre R600 cards (which includes your X700) are no longer supported by the fglrx driver. When updating you probably moved from an older version of fglrx that still supported your card to a more recent version without support. Try removing fglrx altogether, and install the xf86-video-ati driver (and mesa, if you want 3D) instead. With a recent X server, you should also remove your xorg.conf. The X server should detect your card correctly and load the appropriate graphics driver automatically. Your default keyboard layout setting is probably best handled by an appropriate entry in a modular settings file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d. HTH.
