The kernel is 38.1. This has been happening somewhat frequently but not
really predictably. It's happened when using Mathematica, wine, and
LibreOffice. I don't really know if there's any connection there or it's
just a coincidence.

Can you get a full backtrace using gdb?

I know how to attach gdb to Xorg. But I don't know how to get the bt once the
computer has crashed.
