Slackware:) I see xf86-video-fbdev in "extras" folder, but it is i586 version. And there is no x64 version. After reading your answer I decided to read docs, and here is the reason: https://mirrors.slackware.com/slackware/slackware-14.2/source/x/x11/package-blacklist "We don't want this one, as it causes failure of X with no xorg.conf" I was not right about "modern linux": it is only Slackware-specific issue, I am sorry.
