It sounds like you've found a real bug here.

Have you managed to get any feedback from Pavlin on this patch? He 
probably knows the PIM-SM code better than anyone else.

Unfortunately this can't go in until the community branch re-opens, the 
commented-out XLOG macros probably need to get reintroduced as warnings 
just to be conservative (and tidy).
