This can be made to work on modern kernels, but it is not simple to set up the proper routing rules or to program the sending and receiving multicast sockets to properly bind to interfaces. The LANforge live CD (which comes with LANforge and xorp installed) can do this...but it's beyond the scope of something that I can easily explain how to do on your own.
