I found the problem. Seems like pkgconfig is to blame. When I activate @0.25_2, the build fails with the problems I mentioned. Version @0.25_1 lets xournal build just fine. At this point I'm not sure whether the problem is upstream or is MacPorts related, but I'll mention it on the MacPorts track just in case.
