Alas not. This should be no big deal, but it'd require a wrapper for 
fprintf()/gzprintf()  to allow writing either in gzipped or uncompressed 
format.  (gzopen() can read uncompressed files just as well as gzipped 
data, so opening an uncompressed .xoj works just fine; but I can't find 
any zlib option to make it write an uncompressed file).
