You need to be using XFree86-4.1.0 latest from rawhide, as well 
as the latest Mesa and kernel from rawhide also.

On a 16Mb Voodoo3 you need to be starting up XFree86 with a 
maximum resolution of 1024x768 or less or DRI won't work.

You must use 16bit depth on a Voodoo 3 also.
