Yes, this worked. I commented out the "Load DRI" line, and now 2d
performance is good even in 24-bit.

Yes.
Or, as perhaps a less ambitious plan, allow one to tune how much is
allocated to 3D at startup time in the config file. Not as good a
solultion, but it might be better than right now deciding "no 2d
acceleration" vs. "no DRI 3d".
