Hello yet again!

I was wondering if anyone could complete the below "fill-in-the-blanks"
(yes, back to the days of primary school!) in order to "enlighten" (excuse
the pun) me as to what is actually done to start say Gnome:

Linux boots, hands over control to INIT which reads /etc/inittab and opens
many files in /etc/rc*, it then (in Mandrake Linux) executes
"/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon", which basically loads "kdm -nodaemon".
kdm realises that X has not yet been loaded so loads it up on display :0.

When X starts it runs the following files/does the following things:
(1) ______________________________________________________

When X has started, kdm realises this and pops itself up into display :0.
kdm/xdm reads the following files/does the following things:
(2) ______________________________________________________

I select Gnome and type in my username and password and login.

Kdm then magically loads Gnome (as opposed to Ice or KDE) by:
(3) ______________________________________________________

When I logout, the X server is reset???
(4) ______________________________________________________

Hmm, now that was an interesting way to ask some questions!
If you do know to answer to them please send me a response.
I have read some of the X manpages and they are in "code"
(overly technical language!).

Thanks,
George
