   Most likely an MTRR issue.  An easy test is:

   x11perf -shmput500

   On something like a BX chipset with write combining you should get
in the vicinity of 150 Megabytes/sec througput (ie. roughly 150 rects
per second in 32bpp, 300 in 16bpp) on either the "nv" or "mga" drivers
that come with XFree86.
