So yes, you should use xfree 3.3.x (like you are doing) and not the newer
4.1.x version.

vga=771 is the same as vga=0x309 which according to the above table doesn't 
exist.

What you are configuring is the linux kernel framebuffer.  It is *NOT* 
related to X.  In fact, X would not care less what settings you have there.

Your graphics card should be fine.
Could you please post to the list the *exact* details of your graphics card
and monitor (include horizontal and vertical refresh ranges found in your
monitor manual).  Also post /etc/X11/XF86Config and /var/log/XFree86.0.log
to this list.  Xconfigurator doesn't work too well for me either.
