This happens when the Xserver is asked to reset itself after a user session. A workaround is to kill the Xserver instead, forcing a new one to be loaded. For at least xdm and kdm, this can be done by setting DisplayManager*resetSignal: 15 in the appropriate X environment (/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config I think).
