If you are talking about hardware based colorspace conversion and
scaling (often used for accelerating video etc. in another colorspace
such as YUV), then yes, I believe the mobility supports this using the
Xvideo (Xv) extention. I think the P is a mach64 based product, so I'm
not sure if there is Xv support in Xfree86 (maybe CVS). The GATOS group
has added this functionality though, and the drivers they provide have
Xv support. I heard a while back that the GATOS Xv stuff was going to
be merged with Xfree's tree, but I don't know if it ever happened.

Hello all!
I am doing some research on the ATI Mobility P graphics chip. I know
that
it is a little old, but it may be used in a system I am working on .....
I have done some digging on the ATI site and some other places, but I am
having trouble determining whether or not the chip has a "video overlay"
framebuffer in addition to the primary framebuffer. Some initial hints
would suggest that it does not, but if anyone can confirm this either
way or
point me in the right direction, that would be great.
Thanks!
Mark
