I noticed in my previous post that I was using the Matrox mga_hal, and
that people might not want to try to debug a problem with a closed-source
binary-only module present. So I removed mga_hal. The same thing (hang
on startup) happens, though output differs slightly. Here's the log:

I can run it under strace or gdb to try to figure out what it's doing when
it hangs, if that would be at all useful. I'd rather not build from scratch
(I'm using the Debian package), but I will if it would help.
