Has anybody faced crashes while running virtual desktops only ?

I'd had some trouble with my S3Virge GX2 card earlier, which I was running
Xfree86 4.1.0 on. I had described some random crashes, mostly when a large
app ran or when there was some fast scrolling.

Well, It seems that its very stable now, everything seems to have been
fixed.

Trouble is, I had to do it using trial and error, and still don't know
exactly how things have fallen into place.

I'd compiled Xfree 4.1.0 from source, with -O3 -march=i686 optimization
levels. I performs very well, though initially there was some trouble.

But thanks a lot Kevin, your general suggestions were very useful.

It seems that the crashes and the instability that I experienced using
Xfree 4.1.0 and this particular card really takes place only while running
a Virtual screen, which is much larger that the physical display.

My system is 1024x786 but I ran on a resolution of 800x600, because of
better refresh rates. So that involved the usual scrolling about, which
I dint really mind, but interestingly enough, all crashes occured only
while running 800x600 with a virtual 1024x786.

I now run at 1024x786 as the actual resoltion. and, though I have to
put up with a lower refresh rate, the crashes have stopped completely.

The Xfree drivers for s3virge are working perfectly, at all times,
and accelerated, glx-ified, with 'silken mouse', etc...
MTRR support in the kernel I did add after the log file showed a warning
about it, but I don't think it was the issue. I experienced hard crashes
when running the server *without* a frame buffer console, which I don't
understand at all. Anyway, one thing at a time, I do like the fb console,
and now X works great.

No problem at all. Thanks again, Kevin.
