According to the "Driver Status for XFree86 4.0" page, accelerated supported
is provided for my card (TNT2 M64) via the "NV" driver. So, yes I guess :-)

Well, "Off" would be fine; however, it doesn't work either. Issuing 'xset
dpms force off' has no effect, assuming I'm going that right.

Ok, so you're saying I should check out the Linux drivers available via the
NVidia site? Sorry, I'm probably being obtuse. I did indeed look their but
the download site was down; I'll give it another go.
