Hey there... ]) powered by LINUX, preemptible kernel 2.4.12-ac3 ([

I have read earlier this month on the list that [EMAIL PROTECTED] reported some
crashes of the X server when playing DivX movies with mplayer.

My problem is similar - but a different player. :-) Every now and then when I
start playing a video with XINE using the XV extension, the X server either
totally crashes or does lock up. Yet the magic sysrq keys still work, so the
kernel is still alive in the back yard. :-)

I am running a X CVS checkout from Oct 05th 2001 on a Mandrake 8.1 system with
a PIII 500 processor and a Matrox G400 MAX card.

I haven't been able to find any pattern in the lockups/crashes. They seem to
be totally random - but they do happen quite often! I've read similar reports
on the XINE mailinglist.

What is quite interesting is that if the X session locks up, XINE still runs
in the background and sends its frames to XVideo - yet they aren't displayed
anymore but after doing some checks with gdb I figured that out. (also the
audio continues to run, if it just locks up - but usually X totally crashes)

I very much doubt it is a problem with XINE because a user program shouldn't
be able to crash X that easy and that randomly.

Last but not least. XINE uses the MITSHM ext to transfer its frames. I wanted
to make sure that this wasn't causing the trouble so I deactivated it - some
crashes like before. So it really looks like X has a bad bug somewhere... :(

Now if anyone has some suggestions? :-)

Let me know where I can help to locate (or even better fix) the problem -- and
I will happily do so. :)

So long,
Matt

PS. Please cc all follow-ups to my email because I am not subscribed to the
    Xpert list. Thanks a lot!
