This problem took an additional twist when we dropped to runlevel_3 and upon rebooting and restarting X with the typical "startx" command we would then exit the X session and could not return to a command prompt either. So I was suspect [GKX]DM would not be even invoked in runlevel_3 and now it appears the "hand_off" from X to the command prompt is hanging. On what..... I don't know.
