Michel,

Thanks for your replies. I spoke with Dell and they want to replace
the panel for me. Though I'm not convinced that the problem is the
panel.

Unfortunately I don't have windows to know whether or not the problem
also exist with the windows driver.

I tried to find more information about the panel which is made by
IBM (Panel ID: IBM ITUX97E).

I can't find any information on that panel. However, if I look
for information on ITUX97 (sans 'E' at the end) I find:

   http://www.storage.ibm.com/lcd/products/itux97/index.htm

I spoke with a couple of IBM hardware support people who couldn't
find any documents on that model either.

I wonder if the 'E' signifies enough of a difference in the panel's
native resolution that it isn't a 1600x1200.

Is there a way to find out the actual resolution of the panel (since
IBM isn't offering more info on it) and if so is there a way for me
to get X to try some odd modes for testing purposes?

Either way I'm shipping the laptop sometime Monday or Tuesday and
hopefully I'll get it back w/in 7 days or so.

I'll report back on the status after receiving it.

Once again, all your help and time has been most appreciated!
