As far as I know, I'm running the same binaries and config files.  That
is to say, I haven't done anything special in switching runlevels except
to change the default in /etc/inittab.

Here's something interesting I found, though.  If I pass vga=792 to the
kernel (to get a decent res on the boot messages), the flicker goes away
when it's in runlevel 5.  Actually, I've found that it doesn't have to
do with the runlevel at all - the only determining factor is if I start
off with a framebuffer video driver or not.  If I start with one - no
flicker (actually, it's still there, just not very pronounced).  If I
don't start with a framebuffer video driver, the flicker is greatly
enhanced.  Does anyone know why this is?
