Using Xfree86 4 on a RedHat 7.1 box. Today, Mozilla hung while accessing a site, so I killed the mozilla process. When the process dies, it took the whole X server with it, leaving me with a black screen and a prompt.
Typing "startx" brings up the error: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections . .. .. .. .. where the '..' repeats every few seconds Among other things attempted, I got rid of the /tmp/.x11-unix directory, assuming that xinit would recreate it. After a restart (just to clean this out), startx still responds the same way. A strace shows that xinit is trying to open /tmp/.x11-unix/X0 without ever creating it. How do I fix this problem?
