No, I am able ot change the XFree config file and have
the changes be taken. For example, I disable the
ServerLayout section to get gdm to fail so I can run
startx myself. (Yes, it's cheating, but it works.) So
I know that I'm using the proper config file.

I've seen reports on this list about not getting the
DDC stuff to be disabled, too. I'm interested in ideas
about how video hardware communicates, and how XFree
configures this. I also don't know if DDC is actually
the problem. I'd appriciate help on troubleshooting
this.
