X.org ships a completely separate implementation from XFree86; it's
designed to provide a stable X base for X.org members. They track major
changes in XFree86's code and also provide critical bug fixes reported by
their membership.

XFree86 provides the implemention of X distributed with all open source
systems. If you're interested in *running* X, especially on an open
source system, you'll likely want XFree86's implementation.
