I've tested the ASUS M1300 notebook with i815 recently.

at least with this notebook (and quite a number of other notebooks
with S3 chip), it's possible to switch to an extern VGA monitor
with some Fn-Functionkey method.

pretty often, Fn-SwitchToVGA trashes the video mode, but once
you do a XFree86 mode switch afterwards (using
Fn-Ctrl-Alt-KeypadPlus/KeypadMinus)  the external video mode
is ok.

note: in order to be able to switch between modes, you have to specify
at least two modes in the "Modes ..." line(s) in the screen section.
it's possible to use e.g.

        Modes      "1280x1024" "1280x1024"

and switch between two identiacal modes, but for better testing etc. 
I usually prefer

        Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

so I can get different output sync rates...
