hmmm... in your .xinitrc file, are you launching the xterm as a background process (with the & at the end)? that way, when it dies, X won't follow it down. if you launch X with nothing in the .xinitrc file, does it start and then exit immediately? Mine doesn't; tho I used to be under the impression that this was the correct behavior; but for some reason it doesn't do that anymore.
