I'm installing Slackware Linux 8.0, which contains Xfree 4.1.0
on an older Pentium box with a generic Trident PCI card using
the TGUI 9680 chip. I've been struggling with getting Xfree
to run properly and finding some odd behaviors that make X
unusable. I've done searches on the Web and in both the Xpert
and Novice mail archives without finding a clear answer to the
problems.

When X starts up, the familiar cross-hatched pattern on the
screen appears and the mouse cursor display properly. When
I move the mouse, though, it will not reach the top of the
display work area. It stops with something on the order of
about 100 pixels vertical distance to the top of the work area.
The cursor can reach the right, left, and bottom boundaries.

When Gnome and the Sawfish window manager start up, it acts as
if it is shifted down by that same number of pixels; with some
of graphic being "painted" on odd locations on the screen. For
example, the clock display on the Gnome taskbar is displayed
on numerous locations on the display. Running the mouse cursor
over these clocks replaces them with the root window coloring.
Eventually, the clocks reappear as the mouse cursor is moved onto
other parts of the display. Another element of the taskbar that
appears on odd places of the screen is pieces of the "desktop
switcher". It exhibts the same behavior with respect to the
mouse cursor. Even blank portions the taskbar appear is odd
places, so I don't think it is a problem in either of the
applets mentioned above.

As mentioned at first, I've already done a bit of searching the
archives. I've also read the FAQs and manpages for XF86Config and
the Trident driver, changing my XF86Config file until I've reached
my current start of near-success. I can follow up this post with
my XF86Config file and log file if it will help. Right now, I'm
looking for a "completely obvious" solution that I've missed.

thanks,

Mac
