Hi, i've got a NVIDA GeForce MX-400 and i'm trying to get something
going that i thought was pretty
simple.

My video card has a CRT monitor output and a tv output.
I want to have a desktop on my monitor, and a movie player (mplayer)
outputting to the TV.

So far i can achive this by starting two instances of the X Server.
Firstly i have my desktop running at
1024x768, then i want to watch a movie so i start a second X server at
800x600 configured to use tv out.
Then i switch back to my desktop and start the move player with
DISPLAY=:1 then i switch back to the tv
(Ctrl+Alt+F8) to watch the movie.

This is workable, but annoying. It would be nice if the TV Out and the
Monitor could be active at the same time.

So i have been playing with the TwinView options, and this indeed
enables both outputs at once.
However i am unable to get the movie to display fullscreen on the 2nd
display. I have tried KDE2,
WindowMaker, BlackBox, Enlightenment, and IceWM. KDE2 was the only one
that i could get to display the movie on the 2nd(TV) monitor.
Under KDE i am able to get the movie displaying on the TV by starting it
from an XTerm displayed on the
TVs region of the desktop. However, while KDE creates a window that is
800x600, the movie
player detects a 1024x768 X11 display and renders the movie to this
resolution resulting in the right edge
of the movie being cut off, and the bottom part displayed in the 'dead
area' below the TV.

It's also annoying to have to type in the mplayer command then drag the
xterm across to the tv and press enter, then drag it back to type in a
new command because an xterm is unreadble on tv.
I think ideally i would like the TV to appear as a seperate second
display, rather than as part of the same desktop. That way i can tell
mplayer to use the 2nd display, and it will detect it as 800x600 and
display on it perfectly, and i can keep the xterm on the monitor where
it is readable. In other words i want my original configuration, but
with both displays active. Is there any way to do this?

On the other hand, is this a case of mplayer being xinerama unaware?
Should there be someway for it to detect the two monitors, and for me to
tell it to display the video on the 2nd(TV) monitor, and for it to
detect 800x600 and scale perfectly with XV?

Is there a document like the DRI Users Guide
http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/DRI.html for Xinerama? Can i use plain
xinerama instead of the nvidia drivers TwinView support? Would plain
xinerama give me a 800x600 screen on the TV?

Regards,
dan.
