XFree86 doesn't do this itself. This sounds like the Mandrake installer is not allowing installation of 4.1.0. Is there a way in mandrake to install 4.1.0 manually? Then if you have to you can manually configure XFree86. (I haven't used Mandrake.) After a manual install, try 'X -configure' as root and let us know what you get.
