I'm running Redhat 7.2 (and so XFree86 with Redhat's patches: 4.1.0-3)
on a Dell Inspiron 4100 with an SXGA+ display and the ATI Radeon
Mobility; in the XFree86 log, it's listed as:

When I run the machine without an external monitor, things work fine,
both with and without X. When I connect an external monitor (or
projector), with a resolution of 1024x786, and use Fn-F8 to drive the
external monitor only (in X, first setting the resolution to
1024x768), things work fine.
But a problem occurs when I try to drive the LCD and external monitor
simultaneously: the image on the LCD is fine, but the external monitor
is being driven (according to the monitor diagnostics) at
1280x1024. This happens no matter whether I'm running X or not, and
varying the resolutions in X doesn't seem to have an impact on what
resolution the external monitor is driven at. Since the monitor only
supports at most 1024x768, some of the pixels in both dimensions are
being lost, and, when I use a projector, the quality is poor.
Unfortunately, I no longer have Windows running on my machine, so it
would be difficult to check whether the problem is Linux specific.
I'd be very grateful for any information or advice about what is going
on here. Even though it doesn't appear to be an X-specific problem,
I've included my XFree86 logs below. I only really care how things
work under X, so if there is a way of compensating for this problem in
X, I'd be very interested in that, too.
